Focus through hardship

Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s testimony is an example of clarity as the result of faithfulness under pressure. During his ministry, Bonhoeffer was in many ways the conscience of the German church as it battled against an ever-increasing title wave of politically organized hatred, genocide, and leader worship. Through Bonhoeffer’ writing, mentoring, and teaching, he formulated a strong vision of discipleship. Living in the most recent season of systemic persecution, Bonhoeffer was uniquely positioned to prune the peripheral and carry out the essential nature of the Church.

Bonhoeffer was not a perfect man, and his theology would in some cases not line up with our orthodox doctrine. However, he was a man of deep love for the study of God, the communication of scripture, and the world-wide church. He was influenced early on by his family, a trip to America, and the rising tide of nationalism in the world around him. All of this impacted his theology, the role of a church, and true discipleship.

Stanley writes about narrowing focus by zeroing in on core competencies to achieve maximum productivity (43). Bonhoeffer’s focus was narrowed through hardship. He found authentic discipleship to be the most important part of his faith. When the cultural tide turned against believers and the weight of a fascist regime broke the backbone of the German church he was forced to prioritize the essentials. Arguably, a new level of productivity was not one of his goals but Bonhoeffer did increase his influence in this season of hardship. Through addresses to German church, his seminary teaching at Finkenwalde, and his role in the resistance, Bonhoeffer faithfully served Jesus. Although we might not know for sure if he was hanged as a Christian martyr, we can say for certainty that his faith brought him to the gallows.
